The official currency in Cuba is the Cuban Peso (CUP), with 100 cents equaling one peso. There are various denominations of bills and coins available, ranging from 1 peso to 1000 pesos. However, many products and services in both private and government retail networks are priced and sold in MLC, which is Cuba’s freely convertible currency.
Cash payments are no longer accepted in most retail establishments, including hotels. All payments must be made using a debit or credit card. It’s important to note that US payment cards are not accepted in Cuba. Therefore, US residents and other foreign visitors who wish to pay with a credit card during their stay are advised to purchase an MLC prepaid card.
MLC prepaid cards can be obtained at any of the Foreign Exchange Offices (CADECA), which are located at international airports, hotels, city centers, and ports. A visitor’s passport must be presented when purchasing these cards.
These prepaid cards are widely accepted for the payment of goods and services, including hotel reservations, excursions, shopping, airline and bus tickets, car rentals, prepaid phone services, restaurants, bars, and cafeterias, among others.
If the cardholder wishes to pay for products or services in Cuban pesos at a private establishment, they can exchange their prepaid card for the national currency at the current exchange rate at any CADECA office, bank, or ATM.
Upon leaving Cuba, the remaining balance on the prepaid card can be reimbursed in freely convertible currency at the Exchange Houses (CADECA) located at international airports. The reimbursement can be made in any of the foreign currencies accepted by the country.
